     What is Positive Behavior Interventions and Support? (PBIS)

    1. “What is School-Wide PBIS?”

    Improving student academic and behavior outcomes is about ensuring that all students have access to the most effective and accurately implemented instructional and behavioral practices and interventions possible. School Wide Positive Behavior Supports (SWPBS) provides an operational framework for achieving these outcomes. More importantly, SWPBS is NOT a curriculum, intervention, or practice, but IS a decision making framework that guides selection, integration, and implementation of the best evidence-based academic and behavioral practices for improving important academic and behavior outcomes for all students.


    BE RESPONSIBLE

    In general, SWPBS emphasizes four integrated elements: (a) data for decision making, (b) measurable outcomes supported and evaluated by data, (c) practices with evidence that these outcomes are achievable, and (d) systems that efficiently and effectively support implementation of these practices. “What Does School-Wide PBIS Emphasize?”

    1. What Outcomes are Associated with Implementation of Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS)?    

    Schools that establish systems with the capacity to implement SWPBS with integrity and durability have teaching and learning environments that are:

    • Less reactive, aversive, dangerous, and exclusionary.

     

    BE RESPECTFUL

    More engaging, responsive, preventive, and productive. 

    • Address classroom management and disciplinary issues (e.g., attendance, tardies, and antisocial behavior). 
    • Improve supports for students whose behaviors require more specialized assistance (e.g., emotional and behavioral disorders, mental health).

      Most importantly, maximize academic engagement and achievement for all students.

     Why are we using PBIS at Henry L. Slater Grade School?

    Slater Elementary School has behavior issues within the school that have benefited from implementation of PBIS.

    • The teachers and staff benefit through more positive behaviors exhibited.
    • A decrease in behavior distractions in the classroom and on the playground.
    • The students benefit through consistent expectations throughout the building.
    • The administrator benefits through fewer behavior issues to deal with in the office.
    • Parents and community visiting the school benefit through a positive atmosphere in the building.

     What is the Family Link?

    The link between families and PBIS is important to children and their school. When families are involved in their children’s educational activities they do better in school. Families play an important part in their child’s education and social development. The presence of parents in schools not only creates community and cultural connections but provide additional academic supports as well.

      How does all this affect Slater Elementary?

    At Slater Elementary School PBIS includes the use of behavior slips for recording behavior issues, small groups to discuss social skill use, and whole-class lessons focus on social-emotional health. There is a PBIS committee that meets regularly to review data on behavior and disseminate findings to the staff. The committee also organizes some school-wide activities that take place during the school day. These include spirit events, events that include entire families such as Family Fun nights. The school has a supportive administrator. The school uses WOW tickets as rewards for positive behavior.

    The B’s (Be Safe, Be Responsible, and Be Respectful) are posted around the building for all to see. The staff is on board to work with and promote positive behaviors in the building. We have a strong RTI (Response to Intervention) program in our school that addresses academic instruction and in conjunction with PBIS.
